WHAT IS LASIK?
WHAT IS LASIK?

LASIK is a type of procedure that corrects vision by reshaping the cornea to correct for  nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. During the LASIK procedure, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon gently folds back the flap and begins precisely remodeling  the corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. After, the laser treatment is completed, the corneal flap is smoothed into its original position where it quickly seals itself into place. The eye begins healing immediately and minutes to hours after the procedure there will be significant improvement in your vision.

WHY LASIK?

LASIK is the most popular choice for people undergoing refractive surgery. With LASIK, a thin flap of cornea is lifted, and the laser is then used to precisely remodel the undersurface using our custom nomogram that is calcuated for each individual.  Following the procedure, the corneal flap is smoothed to original position, where it quickly seals itself into place. Vision improvement is quick, minutes after sitting up from procedure to hours, with minimal to no discomfort.Using CustomVision technology specific to Stahl VisionYeilding 99.3% of our patients seeing 20/20 or better! With LASIK, it takes only seconds to treat a lifetime of poor vision!

THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT LASIK

This is the number one myth about LASIK! This does not inhibit you from being a candidate. Having an astigmatism means the shape of your cornea is not completely round-however, with LASIK we are going to reshape your cornea anyways!

COOL BEAM LASER

Contrary to popular belief LASIK is done with a "cool beam" laser. Cool beam lasers are a very high energy laser that vaporizes only the targeted tissue. No heat? No worries!

IT'S FASTER THAN YOU. MUCH FASTER.

To ensure perfection, all LASIK equipment has high-speed video imaging to track the position of your eye. If you move, it moves. Quite simple. However, for that to work properly the laser has to be faster than you. A human has the reaction time of about 20-30 milliseconds. The laser? About 2-3 milliseconds! Our laser is 6x faster than the old generation laser.

NO BUT REALLY..IT'S FAST.

It's important to remember that LASIK is surgery, but a very quick surgery. The actual LASIK surgery takes about 15-20 minutes for both eyes!

FLEX AND HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS ACCEPTED.

THE PROCEDURE

No two eyes are the same.  Every person has small distortions in their vision that even glasses and contacts can not correct.  It is these subtle differences that make your eyes completely unique to you!  Dr. Stahl and Dr. Knowles are pleased to be among the first centers in the United States to offer Wavefront CustomVision™. This advance in technology allows Dr. Stahl and Dr. Knowles to perform a more accurate, more precise laser vision correction offering a level of high-definition vision!

CustomVision LASIK is the result of precise measurements, advanced nomograms, and over twenty years of fine tuning our results. This procedure precisely maps your eye 's unique visual irregularities to include those variables that cannot be addressed by glasses or contacts.

Prior to the procedure you will be given a Vaium to help ease your nerves. You will have the relief of knowing you are in the best hands possible; Drs. Stahl & Knowles are Daytons top LASIK surgeons. They will begin with having a staff member place a few numbing drops in your eye. This is to make sure you are in complete comfort during the procedure. A gentle eye lid holder, called a lid speculum, is used during the treatment time to insure that you will not blink. Based on the testing that was done at your prior examination, your suregon will take all the findings and calculate them into your own CustomVision treatment plan. Your surgeon will then create a thin flap on the cornea of your eye, and use the laser to treat the area. Next, the flap will be gently smoothed back down to its orginal position. they will repeat these steps on the other eyes. This is all done within 15 to 20 minutes!

LASIK: 3 simple steps

  1.  The first step is to create a thin layer, or “flap”, under which the Laser Vision Correction is to be applied. Creating the “flap” can be accomplished using either a precise instrument called a microkeratome, or can be created using a femtosecond laser.

  2. The second step is to carefully fold the “flap” over and allow the inner layer of the cornea to be visible so that the laser can treat the area. For most patients the actual application of the  Wavelight Allegretto Wave®  Eye -Q Excimer Laser only takes 2-15 seconds, depending on the amount of correction necessary.

  3. The third step is to gently smooth over the “flap” back into its original position.

The cornea is a remarkable tissue that has a natural bonding quality so that the "flap" adheres back to the cornea without the need for sutures or stitches. This makes the healing and visual recover process very quick for most patients.
