WHAT IS LASIK?

LASIK is a type of procedure that corrects vision by reshaping the cornea to correct for  nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. During the LASIK procedure, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon gently folds back the flap and begins precisely remodeling  the corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. After, the laser treatment is completed, the corneal flap is smoothed into its original position where it quickly seals itself into place. The eye begins healing immediately and minutes to hours after the procedure there will be significant improvement in your vision.

CHOOSING LASIK

LASIK is the most popular choice for people undergoing refractive surgery

because it offers fast visual recovery, minimal discomfort, and long-lasting results. Many patients choose LASIK to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses, making everyday activities like driving, traveling, working out, and waking up in the morning more convenient and enjoyable.

Using advanced CustomVision™ technology, LASIK is tailored specifically to your eyes to provide precise, personalized results. The procedure itself is quick, with most patients noticing improved vision within hours and returning to normal activities within a day or two. For many people, LASIK is a life-changing investment that provides greater freedom, convenience, and confidence in their everyday lives.

      IS LASIK FOR YOU?

If you’re tired of depending on glasses or contact lenses, LASIK may be the solution you’ve been looking for. Many patients choose LASIK to enjoy clearer vision, greater convenience, and freedom from the daily frustration of contacts, dry eyes, or constantly reaching for glasses.

The best way to determine if LASIK is right for you is through a comprehensive consultation and eye exam. During your visit, our experienced team will evaluate your vision, discuss your goals, answer your questions, and create a personalized treatment recommendation based on your eyes and lifestyle.

THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT LASIK

ASTIGMATISM WELCOME!

This is the number one myth about LASIK! This does not inhibit you from being a candidate. Having an astigmatism means the shape of your cornea is not completely round-however, with LASIK we are going to reshape your cornea anyways!

COOL BEAM LASER

Contrary to popular belief LASIK is done with a "cool beam" laser. Cool beam lasers are a very high energy laser that vaporizes only the targeted tissue. No heat? No worries!

IT'S FASTER THAN YOU. MUCH FASTER.

To ensure perfection, all LASIK equipment has high-speed video imaging to track the position of your eye. If you move, it moves. Quite simple. However, for that to work properly the laser has to be faster than you. A human has the reaction time of about 20-30 milliseconds. The laser? About 2-3 milliseconds! Our laser is 6x faster than the old generation laser.

NO BUT REALLY..IT'S FAST.

It's important to remember that LASIK is surgery, but a very quick surgery. The actual LASIK surgery takes about 15-20 minutes for both eyes!

FLEX AND HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS ACCEPTED.

Though medical insurances considers LASIK elective, your Flex and Health savings accounts welcome it with open arms!

FLIGHT READY!

For all our military men & women LASIK is for you! Ready to see like jet fighter pilots? 99.3% of our nearsighted patients see 20/20 after surgery, and 81% of patients see 20/15!

AFFORDABILITY AT ITS FINEST.

LASIK does not have to be a surgery you can't afford! To allow you to pay for your procedure over time, we offer financing options with approved credit!

The CustomVision™ Experience

Successful LASIK begins long before the procedure itself. Accurate measurements gathered during your consultation and pre-operative exam are essential to creating a precise, personalized treatment plan for your eyes. Using advanced diagnostic technology, our team carefully evaluates your vision, corneal shape, prescription stability, and overall eye health to ensure the safest and most effective treatment possible. Proper preparation before surgery and closely following your post-operative care instructions afterward are just as important to achieving the best results. From starting recommended eye drops to attending follow-up visits and protecting your eyes during healing, every step plays a role in helping you achieve clear, comfortable vision and the best possible surgical outcome.

PREPARING FOR SURGERY

Preparing your eyes properly before LASIK is an important part of achieving the best possible surgical results. Starting 7 days before your procedure, patients should stop wearing contact lenses to allow the cornea to return to its natural shape for the most accurate treatment measurements.  You will begin taking 1000mg flaxseed oil capsules twice daily, as well as, start using preservative-free artificial tears four times per day to keep the eyes healthy and well hydrated before surgery. You will also be prescribed 2 medicated eye drops to fight infection and inflammation.

THE PROCEDURE

You will be given a Valium as a light sedative to help ease your nerves. You will have the relief of knowing you are in the best hands possible; Drs. Stahl, Knowles, & Gillis are Dayton's top LASIK surgeons. They will begin with having a staff member place a few numbing drops in your eye. This is to make sure you are in complete comfort during the procedure. A gentle eye lid holder, called a lid speculum, is used during the treatment time to insure that you will not blink. Based on the testing that was done at your prior examination, your surgeon will take all the findings and calculate them into your own CustomVision treatment plan. Your surgeon will then create a thin flap on the cornea of your eye, and use the laser to treat the area. Next, the flap will be gently smoothed back down to its original position. they will repeat these steps on the other eyes. This is all done within 15 to 20 minutes!

AFTERCARE

After your procedure you will go home for a mandatory two hour nap. You will have to be seen for just check up appointments post-operative; the morning following your surgery, one week, and a ten week with your surgeon or at the comfort of your local optometrist. During the first few days after your LASIK procedure, it is important to avoid bumping or rubbing your eyes. It is normal and expected for you to have a mild scratchy or dry sensation. You will be given detailed instructions regarding eye drops to use to assist with the healing process.

Most patients having CustomVision™ LASIK at Stahl Vision are able to pass a drivers’ eye test without eyeglasses or contacts within about a day of their LASIK Eye Surgery.
