REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE (RLE)

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR
AGING EYES
LASIK surgery is the most popular laser vision correction procedure sought out as an option to correct distance vision. However, patients who are over the age of 50, typically want to see better up close and at a distance or may even have beginning signs of Cataracts. In these cases Refractive Lens Exchange may be a better option than LASIK. Imagine being able to see your world as it was when you were younger, less dependent on glasses and contacts, and without the hassle of reading glasses. This is all now possible with refractive lens exchange or clear lensectomy. Stahl Vision and Eye Laser and Surgery Center are Dayton's most experienced centers for Refractive Lens Exchange, or as it is also known, Clear Lensectomy, or Lens Replacement Surgery.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
is a synonym with Clear Lensectomy, or Lens Replacement Surgery. We offer 4th generation Advanced Lifestyle Bifocal Implants or Premium Implant Lenses such as the Odyssey®, Multifocal Tecnis®, and Acrysof Panoptix®. These are types of bifocal/multifocal implant lenses used with Refractive Lens Exchange as well as cataract surgery. These implant lenses, also known as intraocular lenses, allow clear distance, intermediate and near vision for many patients. Refractive Lens Exchange is a great option for people over 50 who are struggling with near vision and interested in seeing more clearly without their glasses and contacts. Refractive Lens Exchange is a better option for vision correction than LASIK for those who need bifocals or readers, or those who are starting to develop cataracts.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a common age-related condition that typically begins around the age of 40. It occurs when the eye gradually loses its ability to focus on close objects—a process known as accommodation. This happens because the natural lens inside the eye becomes less flexible over time, making it harder to adjust focus for near tasks.
If you've been diagnosed with presbyopia, you may notice difficulty reading small print or seeing clearly up close. Your doctor may recommend reading glasses, bifocals, or other vision correction options to help manage these changes.

RLE can be a better option

As we age, changes naturally occur inside the eye that LASIK cannot prevent or correct. After the age of 40–50, many patients begin developing presbyopia — the gradual loss of near vision that leads to dependence on reading glasses — along with early lens changes that eventually become cataracts. While LASIK reshapes the surface of the eye to improve vision, it does not address the aging natural lens inside the eye where these changes occur.
For this reason, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is often a better long-term vision correction option for patients over 50. RLE is the exact same procedure as modern cataract surgery, but it is performed before cataracts become advanced enough to qualify for medically necessary removal through insurance. Even mild cataracts or early lens dysfunction can impact visual quality, night driving, glare, contrast sensitivity, and reading vision — and patients with these early lens changes are often no longer ideal LASIK candidates.
During RLE, the eye’s natural lens is replaced with a premium intraocular lens (IOL) designed to correct vision at multiple distances. Depending on the lens selected, patients may achieve clearer distance, intermediate, and near vision while greatly reducing — or even eliminating — their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. The same advanced lifestyle lens options available to cataract surgery patients are also available to RLE patients.
RLE can also be an excellent option for patients with high levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism who may not qualify for LASIK because too much corneal tissue would need to be removed to safely achieve ideal results.
One of the greatest long-term advantages of RLE is that because the eye’s natural lens has already been replaced, patients will never develop cataracts in the future. Rather than correcting vision temporarily on the surface of the eye while the internal lens continues to age, RLE addresses the source of age-related visual changes before cataracts become more advanced.
At Stahl Vision and Eye Laser & Surgery Center of Ohio, our surgeons have extensive experience helping patients throughout the Dayton area determine whether LASIK or Refractive Lens Exchange is the best option for their vision, lifestyle, and long-term visual goals.
HOW TO DECIDE WHICH IMPLANT LENS IS FOR YOU?
The best way to determine which Advanced Lifestyle Bifocal Implant Lens is best for your Refractive Lens Exchange is to complete a full eye exam in our office. Once our best surgeons have measured and examined your eyes, we can discuss your lifestyle, vision needs or concerns and then determine which Advanced Lifestyle or Premium Implant Lens will help you see your best. These upgraded options are a vast improvement over the standard or monofocal implant lens which would require you to still be dependent on glasses or contacts for most of the time. These lenses are trusted, as well as, tested and approved by the FDA.
Refractive Lens Exchange is a non-covered service by insurances and Medicare. Payment is due at the time of your A-Scan appointment. Financing is available with approved credit through Carecredit.
