REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE (RLE)
NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR
For most patients wanting to see better without glasses, LASIK eye surgery is the most popular option in order to see distance. However, for patients who are over 55, especially those wanting to see better up close or those with early cataracts, Refractive Lens Exchange may be a better option than LASIK. Imagine being able to see your world more like when you were younger, less dependent on glasses and contacts, or even reading glasses.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
-(also synonymous with Clear Lensectomy) is an elective procedure for people who want to see better with minimal use of glasses or contacts and for people who are not a candidate for LASIK due to the presence of a mild cataract. With advancements in technology there are now may options available to renew your vision. Most people who want to see better without glasses may want to pursue LASIK, but patients, who are usually over 50, find out they are no longer a candidate for LASIK because they have the beginnings of an early cataract. Refractive Lens exchange is an intraocular procedure that is done to remove the natural lens of the eye and replace it with a more advanced lens, such as a bifocal lens implant, allowing you to see multiple distances.
RLE is the same as cataract surgery, except that insurance doesn’t cover the cost because the cataract is mild. The patient wants their vision corrected, but they are not a candidate for LASIK because of the mild cataract. The same lens optics are available RLE as for regular cataract surgery. RLE may also be used for patents who have such a high glasses prescription and this is why they are not a candidate for LASIK.
With RLE and the advanced lifestyle IOLs you not only have the potential to see near, far and everything in between with little to no dependence on glasses or contacts. Refractive Lens Exchange is a better option for vision correction for those who have a lens problem such as Presbyopia or Cataracts or who have extreme amounts of myopia, hyperopia, or Astigmatism where LASIK would require the removal of too much tissue from the surface of your eye to achieve your prescription.
